If you’re in crisis (U.S.)

Call or text 988 to reach the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline, or call 911 for emergencies. If you’re outside the U.S., contact your local emergency number.

What happens when you contact 988?

You’ll be connected with trained counselors who listen, provide support, and share resources. You can call, text, or chat; help is free and confidential. The service is available 24/7 across the U.S. (“In Crisis? Call or Text 988”, NIMH).

When to call 911

  • Immediate danger to yourself or others
  • Medical emergency or need for urgent on-site help
  • You (or someone with you) can’t safely get to a hospital/clinic

Tips while you wait

  1. Stay where you are if it’s safe; remove anything dangerous nearby.
  2. Breathe slowly; notice five things you can see, four you can touch, three you can hear.
  3. If you’re with someone in crisis, stay with them and speak calmly.
